What Does A16Z Mean?

A16Z is a numeronym that represents the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. The numeronym is the first and last letter of the firm with the character count in-between.

Numeronyms are somewhat of an insider’s joke for developers as most non-techies wouldn’t be aware of the concept. Other common numeronyms include I18N (for internationalization) and L10N (for localization).

Marc Andreessen is considered by many to be a living legend in Silicon Valley. As the co-founder of Netscape, he is widely considered the father of the modern Web browser. As such, his VC investments are tech-centric.
